Poetry judge, Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Lawrence

 Poetry:

Caryn has been a poet for over 35 years, and written four books of poetry (Landed, Animals in the House, Reading the Body and Lot's Wife). She also writes fiction and has two novels in the works, and has written a memoir, The Sky Begins At Your Feet. Additionally, she has edited several anthologies.

Caryn have a master's of art in creative writing and Ph.D. in English (with a focus on poetry) from the University of Kansas. For more than 17 years, she led community writing groups for many populations, including adults in transition, children and teens, elders, public housing residents, the Latino community in Kansas City, people of color in other locations, men, women, people living with cancer and other serious illness, health professionals and others. Caryn learned a great deal about facilitating such groups through extensive group facilitation training through the bioregional movement. Her facilitation training and experience led her to find the only college program of its kind, Transformative Language Arts, which educates master's level students on using writing, storytelling and performance for community building and personal growth. Caryn has also taught at the college level every semester since the fall of 1986 at the University of Kansas, Friends University, Haskell Indian Nations University, and since 1996, Goddard College, Vermont.

 Prose judge, Sarah Smarsh, Topeka

 Prose:

Sarah Smarsh is a freelance writer and assistant professor of English at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where she teaches creative nonfiction writing. Sarah has written for The Huffington Post, Kansas City’s The Pitch (Village Voice Media) and newspapers across the Midwest, and has won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Kansas Press Association. She holds an MFA in nonfiction writing from Columbia University, as well as degrees in journalism and English from the University of Kansas.

Sarah recently penned two books on Kansas history for Globe Pequot Press.  It Happened in Kansas and Outlaw Tales of Kansas (fun!) will be released in paperback in Summer 2010.
